Alton Towers
Alton Towers is located just north of the village of Alton in Staffordshire, in the north west midlands of England. It has been developed in the grounds of the estate which once was the seat of the Earls of Shrewsbury. The house is semi-ruined but is a fine example of a gothic revival country house.
As well as the theme park rides, the complex also offers beautiful gardens and two hotels. The estate dates back to the Saxon King Ceolred of Mercia who built a fortress on the site of an earlier Hill fort dating back to 1000 BC. The Normans built a castle there and the estate passed by marriage through various families and became the seat of Talbot family who were created Earls of Shrewsbury.
In the early 20th century, the 20th Earl decided to sell off the estate. Alton Towers was started as a theme park in 1980. Amongst its present facilities the theme park includes several very exciting rides. The complex is owned by Merlin Entertainments and attracts nearly three million visitors a year, making it the 11th most popular theme park in Europe.
