Canterbury Cathedral

Founded by St Augustine in 602, Canterbury Cathedral is one of the oldest and most famous Christian places of worship in England and a World Heritage site. The Archbishop of Canterbury is the Head of the Church of England and is elected by the Dean and the 24 Canons, although in practice and by custom, they confirm the appointment of the nominee put forward by the monarch on the advice of the Prime Minister.

The building has been rebuilt and extended many times over the centuries firstly by the Saxon Kings of Kent and Wessex. The Normans completely rebuilt the Cathedral and subsequent Archbishops extended the buildings and much of the present structure dates from the 12th Century. The last major changes were made in the 1830’s when the Arundel Tower was built to replace the original Norman tower which had become unsafe and was demolished.

Over a million people worship in Canterbury Cathedral each year. Like many of these very old buildings, the effects of weathering and especially recent pollution, have caused damaged to the stonework and carvings. The Cathedral is in need of very extensive repairs and restoration.
