Sunny Holidays In The South
21 July 2011
Family holidays to the beach are something that many people enjoyed as children, but traditions often fade away over time. If you are thinking of starting a new family tradition and instigating a group summer holiday, why not head down south for better weather - though this is not guaranteed, - award winning beaches and lots to see and do?
Holidays in Somerset are a great option for family getaways, and you can enjoy a week or two at the beach, explore forests and seek out hidden castles and coves. Holidays in Somerset can be a great opportunity for children to discover new things – if your children like animals, take a trip to the Exmoor Pony Centre to see ponies in their natural environment. If they’re keen on castles, knights and kings then take them to visit Dunster, Nunney and Farleigh Hungerford castles – do a little research before you go and you can thrill the children with tales of kings and queens, knights and damsels!
Family holidays in Somerset are a great way to combine both stunning beaches and beautiful forest and woodland areas. You can mix things up by having a few days on the beach with buckets and spades (and blankets and books for the grownups!), and then spend a couple of days exploring the woodlands and forests. Before you set off, do a little research on holidays in Somerset. Have a look for activity packs that you can print off and take with you. You could make up a quiz for days at museums, castles and so on, and you could find some generic scavenger hunts for children to do on the beach or in the woods. If you go in a large group, you could give a copy of the challenges to each child, or if there are big age gaps, team children up to even things out a little. You can even get the adults involved, and take some healthy snacks and bottles of water on days out to keep everyone going! Fossil hunting can also be a great way to spend an afternoon at the beach – even big kids are sure to be kept busy.
Holidays in Somerset are a great way to get the kids active and trying new things, why not see if you can find any water sports for the family to try their hand at? Sailing can be great fun for kids, and adults might like to have a go at wind surfing – you could even include sea fishing in this category (perhaps for the more sedate members of your group). Cycling is also great fun for families, and there is some really beautiful countryside to explore, particularly around Exmoor. You can pack a few lunches and blankets into rucksack, and you should be able to hire bikes for everyone – perhaps with seats on the back for very small children. Then you can set off and find a spot overlooking a sandy bay or in the midst of a green glade, perfect for a quick rest and some lunch.
