How To Organise Holidays For Large Families
06 July 2011
Lots of families choose to holiday in the UK, particularly those with young children or older members who may not be able to travel abroad easily. Self catering accommodation is very popular with extended families that are after a break by the beach or in the English countryside, and if you are planning a holiday for your family there are several tips that you can follow to make your stay easier...
1. Research the area beforehand
Self catering accommodation is popular because it allows you to control your holiday and eat as and when you like. This is particularly useful for young children or some guests, who may have specific dietary requirements or need to eat at specific times of the day. Self catering accommodation gives you the freedom to have late breakfasts and brunches, picnics on the beach or in a park, and barbeques in the evening. Have a look at the area that you’d like to go to before booking any self catering accommodation. Will it be suitable for everyone in your party? You may need self catering accommodation with easy access for buggies or older guests, and you might want a garden area for children to play in during the day. Local attractions and play areas can all be useful, and you need to make sure that there will be plenty to keep you all occupied during your holiday.
2. Shop when you get there
Self catering accommodation is great for creating your own menus and allowing you much more freedom in terms of what and when you eat. However, don’t be tempted to take too much food with you. Depending on how far you are travelling, cold food may not transport well and bags of groceries can take up a lot of room in the car that is needed for luggage! Instead, take a few essentials and snacks with you to keep everyone going until you can do a big shop when you arrive. Tea and coffee are always welcome, along with fruit and a packet of biscuits. Take essentials like sugar, herbs and olive oil, as you probably won’t get through a whole packet or bottle during your stay and it is more economical to take your own rather than buying these items when you arrive. Find the nearest supermarket online before you go, and make a note of where it is located so that you can find it easily once you arrive.
3. Take some form of entertainment
Unfortunately, the British summer can often not be relied upon to produce gloriously warm sunny days. Taking some entertainment for rainy days is essential, particularly if you have children travelling with you. Games consoles such as an Xbox or Wii are always well received, or you could tread the more traditional route of board games. Older children can enjoy Cluedo and Monopoly, and you might even get them interested in a round of charades!
Good preparation is essential when you are planning your holiday, and can help the whole trip to go smoothly, allowing you to relax as much as possible!
