Winter on the North Yorkshire Moors

If it snows in this region, winter can linger quite a long time but the result is scenery that is a wonder to behold. The North Yorkshire Moors are lovely at any time of the year but with snow they are transformed into a wonderland. Of course, if it snows really hard, many parts can be cut off from the outside world and many a self catering cottage in Yorkshire has known what it means to live off stored reserves and a remote farmhouse in the Yorkshire Moors will plan for this eventually.

Along the coast, a bed and breakfast in Whitby provides the ideal base to explore the moors and a hotel in Pickering with its many fine shops and access to the local North Yorkshire Moors Railway provides something of interest for all family members. Or try a guest house in Scarborough with its coastal walks and fish and chips to die for. Inland, the Moors contain some of the finest scenery to be found anywhere. Stay at a hotel in Guisborough with its ancient market and ruined abbey or a hotel in Helmsley with its ruined Norman castle.

Whatever your interest, North Yorkshire has something to meet your needs and is at its most spectacular during the winter months of January to March when the weather can be at its most dramatic and the changing light on the hills and the moorlands seem to be constantly changing. It is a landscape of open heath land with hidden valleys with villages that look as though time has passed them by.
