London Heathrow Airport

The 5th busiest airport in the world and the largest in the United Kingdom, London Heathrow Airport lies 14 miles west of central London in the Borough of Hillingdon. The airport handles a staggering volume of over 67 million passengers a year. That is the equivalent of the entire population of the British Isles through one airport. It also deals with nearly half a million aircraft movements.

The airport was officially opened in 1946 and has been continuously expanded since them with Terminal 5 being officially opened by Queen Elizabeth II in 2008. It has two main runways, five terminal buildings and the airport complex covers over 4.6 square miles. Plans to build another runway and a sixth terminal were approved and then scrapped in early 2010.

The major airlines that use or are based at Heathrow include British Airways, Virgin Atlantic and BMI.

Road access is via the M25 (terminals 4 and 5), the A30 (terminal 4), the M4 and A4 (terminals 1,2 and 3). Bus services from various locations, including from London Victoria Coach Station, provided by National Express and Oxford Bus Company and rail services to Heathrow Central, Heathrow Terminal 5 Station and underground connection on the Piccadilly Line. Terminals 1,2 and 3 are within walking distance of each other and Terminal 4 is via Heathrow Connect and Terminal 5 via Heathrow Express trains. London Heathrow Airport is owned by BAA and operated by Heathrow Airport Limited.
