Guest Houses in Britain

Guest house accommodation is very similar to a bed and breakfast but normally defines a larger establishment. Many properties use both terms in their advertising depending on the market they are trying to attract. A guest house can be found in most towns and villages and provides several rooms for nightly lettings. Officially a guest house is defined as a property providing breakfast, which is normally included in the rate, but which is not licensed to serve alcoholic drinks. In size a guest house is somewhere between a bed and breakfast and a small hotel but unlike a hotel it is a private residence although the owners may not live on the premises. In common parlance the terms bed and breakfast and guest house are inter-changeable. In the USA a Guest House is more frequently called a Boarding House and is the same product.

In practice therefore, the term Guest house has no strict rules applied and many do have a license to serve drinks. The only time the rules apply is if they are in the Tourist Board grading scheme which is based on the star rating system. However many a guest house won’t bother to join the grading scheme as it is quite expensive and there are very many fine properties that are of excellent quality but are not officially graded. To judge what a guest house has to offer, look at their website, their adverts on websites like Stayinbritain and see photographs and videos of the guest house.
